Kora Workshop – Le Renard Perché, Alsace
26 April – 2 May 2026
Join me for an extended kora workshop at Le Renard Perché, a beautiful retreat space in eastern France, close to Colmar and the Alsace wine route. Surrounded by nature, with views across the Vosges, it’s a peaceful and inspiring place to focus on music.
Over the week we’ll explore kora technique, traditional repertoire, and creative approaches to arranging and improvisation. Sessions are a mix of group learning, individual guidance, and unhurried practice time. Whether you’re new to the kora or looking to refine your playing, the teaching will be adapted to your level so you can make steady, enjoyable progress.
Life at Le Renard Perché is relaxed — we share meals, spend evenings playing together, and have time to walk, rest, or explore the local villages. Accommodation and food are provided on site, so you can fully immerse yourself in the music without distractions.
Numbers are kept small to ensure a focused and supportive atmosphere. If you’d like to join, get in touch to reserve your place and receive full details about travel, accommodation, and what to bring.

Basel Academy Weekend Workshop (Switzerland) - (FULLY BOOKED)
The Kora is widespread in the coastal states of West Africa (Senegal to Togo), as well as in Mali and Burkina Faso and is a popular solo and orchestral instrument there. It consists of a bulbous calabash body, a long neck and 21 strings arranged in two rows, has a wide range of playing possibilities and can be combined very well with voice, percussion and various melody instruments. Typical of the game on the Kora is rhythmically imaginatively designed melody improvisations.
Josh Doughty began learning Kora as a child. First with his father Adam Doughty, and later with Kora virtuosos such as Seckou Keita, Fily Cissokho and Surahata Suso. Since 2007, he has been a master student of Toumani Diabaté.
Josh teaches the principle of listening-seeing-playing without the use of notes. For intensive and individual learning, we work alternately in large and small groups. High-quality instruments are provided and can be rented or purchased. If the group size is sufficient, the individual workshops can be converted into an ongoing course.
The course language is English. The Kora courses (306A-C) are designed so that they can be attended individually or consecutively.

Concert in Basel - 20th November

Garden Sessions: Alain Rouamba and Josh Doughty
Alain Rouamba and Josh Doughty bring together two very different musical backgrounds, combining the beautiful melodies and rhythms of the West African kora and ngoni.
Alain grew up in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, learning his craft from a Griot family, where he was always surrounded by music.
Josh was inspired by the powerful kora music of Mali from an early age and developed his own unique style on the instrument, meshing traditional rhythms with modern western influences.
These two accomplished and distinctive musical voices join forces to create a captivating afternoon of music.
